THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT

The day of Judgement What does ‘Yawm’ mean? ‘Allamah Aalusi writes, The time between Sunrise and Sunset is considered to be ‘Yawm’ amongst the general people. The duration of the ‘Day of Judgement’ (Yawm-ul-Qiyaamah)? Allah Almighty says in Al-Qur’an Al-Kareem in regards to the day of Judgement; The angels and Jibrael ascend towards Him. That chastisement will fall on a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years.
  • Sayydiuna Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) narrates that it was said, Yaa Rasool Allah, it is said in the Qur’an regarding the day of Judgement that it will be 50,000 years long. How long will this day be? The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said, “I swear by Allah in whose hands is my life, that day will be made short for the believers, to the extent that it will be shorter than the time that it takes a person to recite his Fard prayer ”
This narration is narrated by Hafiz Ibn Jareer, Hafiz Ibn Katheer, Imam Bayhaqi, Imam Suyuti, Imam Ahmad, and many other scholars.
  • Justice from Allah’s behalf would be that only those people who prayed their Salah with such concentration in the world, as if they were looking at Allah and did not think of anything whilst Salah, they would be the ones for whom 50,000 years would feel like the duration of their prayer.
  • For example, once Imam Abu Hanifah (May Allah have mercy on him) was praying in the masjid, when suddenly a snake fell of the roof. Due to this event, chaos broke out everywhere however Imam Abu Hanifah continued with his prayer.
  • One Ansaari Sahabi was attacked with an arrow during prayer and bled severely, however he was so focused in prayer that he continued and did not even realise.
  • People who prayed with such concentration, when the day of Judgement begins, Allah Almighty will bless them with his vision and they will be so immersed seeing Allah Almighty that the way in the world regardless of whatever happened outside their prayer, they had no knowledge of it, the same way they will not realise the 50,000 years go by whilst enjoying the vision of Allah Almighty. It will feel as if only a few minutes have passed by.
  • However, Allah Almighty showers his mercy over his people as oppose to his ‘Adl, for if he was to do ‘Adl over us, we wouldn’t even deserve the blessings that we receive in this world, let alone the next.
Translated from Tafseer Tibyan Al-Qur’an of ‘Allamah Ghulam Rasool Sa’eedi (May Allah have mercy on him)
