Speech Notes.
When Allah created Adam, then he also create Hawwa for his companionship and ease. The
angels told Adam that he was to marry Hawwa and so he began to approach her. As he did so, the
angels stopped him and said ‘you must pay the Mahr’. Adam asked what the Mahr was. They
replied ‘to send Durud and Salam upon the final Messenger, Sayyiduna Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم‘.
The Mahr of the first Nikah on earth was not gold and silver, but Durud upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.
Nikah, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, is his Sunna. This means that when a couple get married, they are
rewarded for it. Each and every moment they spend maintaining this Sunna, they are getting a
reward from Allah.
Allah – who possesses the best examples – provides us with a metaphor to describe what the
relationship should be between the husband and wife. He explains that they are clothing for one
another. Why?

a. The primary purpose of clothing is covering the private parts (Satr al-Awra). In the same way,
the husband and wife cover each other’s chastity, shortcomings and defects.
b. The function of clothing is to provide warmth. In the same way, the husband and wife provide
warmth to one another, both physical and spiritual.
c. Clothing can also be a form of identity. Certain people wear certain clothing. People become
grouped according to the clothes they wear. In the same way, the husband and wife are a form
of identity for one another.

Three purposes of Nikah:
a. Children.
b. Preservation of Nasl (ancestry).
c. Protection from sin.
