About the Course

Do you have a passion to read the Glorious Qur’an in the Arabic language with the correct rules of tajweed and don’t know how? Did you read the Qur’an many years ago as a child and have now become rusty or feel the need to go back to the basics? If so, then this is your perfect opportunity to learn and correct your recitation with the correct rules. There is no need to feel shy or embarrassed!

Al Hira Center is delighted to present this short stepping stone course to those who have a genuine passion to read the Book of Allah fluently and proficiently in the language it was originally revealed more than 1,400 years ago.

This course will run twice a year and cover the basics rules of tajweed to be allow reading of the Glorious Qur’an correctly and independently. Students will work through a preliminary book systematically where each lesson will build upon the previous one. Initially emphasis will be placed on learning the Arabic alphabet and Makhaarij (origin of pronunciation). This will then lead to learning about the vowels and the sounds produced when they are added onto individual Arabic letters. After this students will learn how to read combinations of letters and vowels.

Why is it obligatory to learn tajweed?

Allah the Almighty says in the Glorious Qur’an, chapter, 2, surah al Baqarah verse 121 and chapter 73, surah al Muzzammil verse 4 respectively:

‘Those to whom We have given the Book, recite it as it ought to be recited’

‘And recite the Qur’an slowly and distinctly (tarteel)’

Sayiduna Ali (RA) said that tarteel means tajweed of the letters and knowledge of the stops.

Ibn al-Jazari (d. 833 AH / 1429 CE), the greatest authority of the disciplines of Glorious Qur’an recitation (tajweed) and canonical Quran transmissions (qira’at), said in a verse, “It is obligatory to train oneself to recite the Quran with tajweed. Whoever recites the Quran incorrectly [through neglect] is sinful.”

Why is this obligatory? Because Allah the Almighty revealed the Glorious Qur’an in accordance with the rules of tajweed – that is how the Angel Jibril (upon him be peace) taught it to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace); that is how the Messenger taught his Companions to recite; and that is how it was taught by each generation of Muslims to succeeding generations, all the way down to our own generation. Reciting the Glorious Qur’an according to the rules of tajweed is also the only way to bring out the true beauty of Qur’anic recitation.
